What Is An Entrepreneur
Fundamentally?

What is an entrepreneur? At first? A tycoon? A ruthless money maker? A "no holds barred" fighter? A "dare devil"?

Some of them do become all of that and more, if it's in their character.
But, not at first.

How To Be One

Fundamentally, the typical entrepreneurs are "dreamers". They start planning a new venture with a deep rooted sensation that they can do this "thing" ... and because they want to, badly! Call it instinct, if you want.

They can't help feeding the newborn idea. The more they see it grow, the more they are convinced that it is going to work. By that time, they're hooked!

From there on they devote all their energies toward making it happen.

By the way, it that last sentence lies a fundamental characteristic of the true entrepreneur.

I'm glad that you asked - What is an entrepreneur? - though, because I feel it is essential that you know, if you are considering becoming an entrepreneur.

Unusual Insights

There is an "official" definition of entrepreneur, of course.

But, in practice, I submit that the true entrepreneur is a person determined to accomplish something for the sheer pleasure of taking on a meaningful challenge ... usually only meaningful to her/him.

The entrepreneur does not always succeed. On the other hand, s/he gains valuable experience and extra insight with every attempt ... which is a form of success in itself, as well as a source of satisfaction.

  • The entrepreneur's task or mission is generally something that no one else would dare undertake. They will say it's "impossible" (usually because they do not believe they have "what it takes").

  • The true entrepreneur is seldom in it for the money ... at first. The realization that the her/his idea could turn a healthy profit comes later, during the planning process.

  • The true entrepreneur is first driven by her/his unbridled passion and desire to accomplish something no other individual has ever accomplished before.

Otherwise, a good dictionary could supply an adequate (and widely accepted) definition of entrepreneur for most purposes ... mostly academic.

Experience Has Taught Me That...

I can state from experience that ...

The true entrepreneur goes where most other people have convinced themselves (for whatever reason) that they will fail.

Your next question is likely going to be why?

  1. Why do entrepreneurs at heart believe in the feasibility of their chosen undertaking and in their ability to make it feasible?

  2. Why do most people believe that successful entrepreneurs have accomplished the impossible?
